Brogan pounces for Dubs
DUBLIN 2-10 DOWN 0-13
Better late than never. This was Dublin's least impressive performance of the league so far, but they still managed to win and have booked a place in the league final -- a good night's work all things considered.
Alan Brogan will take the plaudits for his match-winning injury-time goal, but Kalum King will feel rotten for spilling the ball into his path after failing to collect a delivery from Brogan's brother, Bernard. It was harsh on Down, who gave as good as they got for the 70 minutes, and will have felt the least they deserved was a draw.
From the start, both teams were committed to attack. A Paul Flynn goal after 10 minutes gave Dublin an early edge, but Down quickly responded and the teams were level again thanks to points from Benny Coulter and Marty Clarke. Neither team established any sort of concerted spell of dominance, and in a strangely bloodless 20 minutes shared three points each to go in at the break level -- 1-5 to 0-8.
The tit-for-tat pattern continued into the second half, but there was a bit more of a cut to the game now as both teams tackled with more intent and moved the ball with more purpose. The sides shared three points each before Dublin finally gained an advantage of some substance as two scores from Tomas Quinn put them 1-9 to 0-10 ahead.
Their lead didn't last long. In the space of a minute, Down wiped it out as first Marty Clarke knocked over a free despite loud booing, and then Conor Maginn curled over a beauty from wide on the right to level the scores again.
Clarke edged Down ahead late on, but injury-time belonged to the Brogan brothers as first Bernard brought the teams level and then Alan struck that late winner.
