Banville leads charge for Wexford

WEXFORD propelled themselves back into the promotion race with a deserved victory over Roscommon at Wexford Park yesterday afternoon.

Roscommon struck for a Donie Shine 73rd-minute goal, but the scoreline flattered the visitors, who could not overcome the loss of full-forward Ger Heneghan just on half-time, dismissed on a second yellow.

Wexford got off to a dream start with five unanswered points. PJ Banville opened the scoring after three minutes, with Daithi Waters, Ben Brosnan and Banville once again tagging on further points. Roscommon opened their account through a 12th-minute Cathal Cregg point, with Darren McDermott adding two points to reduce the deficit to two, 0-5 to 0-3.

After Ciaran Lyng and John Rogers exchanged points, Banville worked his way along the endline to beat 'keeper Geoffrey Claffey with a low shot at the near post, which set his side up for a 1-6 to 0-6 interval lead.

Wexford opened after the break with points from Brosnan and Banville, while the visitors had to wait until the 48th minute for their opening second-half score, a Gregg point.

Roscommon were battling to stay in the game, but Kevin Higgins failed to find the net from close range eight minutes from the end, when a goal would have left the minimum separating the side. Wexford pushed on to open up a 1-12 to 0-10 lead, before Shine fired home his consolation effort deep into stoppage time.

During the 70 minutes referee Conor Lane issued 14 yellow cards and one red in a game of no real incident.
