Banner enjoy forward march
CLARE'S slicker finishing proved much too strong for the University of Limerick in this preliminary-round clash at Doonbeg yesterday.
The home side were by far the better side all through, kicking 18 scores and only four wides all afternoon.
In contrast, UL returned nine scores in all, with a wide tally of eight.
The students were dealt a big blow early on when their midfielder and Kerry star Anthony Maher had to retire with an injury following a hard but fair shoulder from the Banner's David Russell.
At the break, Clare enjoyed a merited 0-10 to 0-4 lead, with their midfield pairing of Russell and Ger Quinlan a dominant force throughout.
After half-time, the students kicked three unanswered points between the 42nd and 44th minutes to narrow the gap a little.
However, a resolute Clare attack tagged on the points, keeping UL at bay.
The students did manage a well-worked goal on 57 minutes when their best forward Colm Dempsey put substitute Edmund Walsh through to slot past Clare goalie Peter O'Dwyer.
But Clare's superior accuracy up front earned them a clash against Cork next week.
And, to compound UL's woes, they finished with 14 players after corner-forward James O'Donoghue saw red for an off-the-ball incident spotted by an umpire with five minutes remaining.
