Frampton to face Cruz rematch

Carl Frampton looks set to defend his WBA title in the USA against the man he dethroned, with 'Ring' magazine suggesting that the fight will take place on January 28.

The Belfast feather announced yesterday that a rematch with Mexico's Leo Santa Cruz is on, with Cruz's camp citing Las Vegas or Los Angeles to host the blockbuster.

Undefeated Frampton beat La Cruz on a majority decision in New York in July in a thriller to improve to 23 straight wins. The bout had a rematch clause.

Meanwhile, Joe Ward remains undecided about staying amateur or turning pro. The World No 3 ranked light-heavy, who is being chased by a US promoter, will make a decision before Christmas.

IRELAND'S U-17s completed the first phase of the qualifying competition for the European Championship finals with a 100 per cent record by beating Greece 1-0 in Andorra yesterday.

Colin O'Brien's charges will now compete in the elite phase next spring with a place at the finals in Croatia next May at stake. Yesterday's win came courtesy of Aaron Connolly's 21st-minute goal after good work by Aaron Bolger and Gavin Kilkenny.

Meanwhile, two goals from Leanne Kiernan was the highlight of a superb team performance as Ireland's U-19 women clinched a place in the elite round of qualifying for their competition with a game to spare by beating Wales 2-0.
