Davy Fitzgerald is a spin doctor. He has perfected deflecting attention from his team's loss to focus the post match discussion elsewhere.
Usually the referee is the scapegoat, while he tells us how proud he is of the character his players showed.
The facts are this. As defending All-Ireland champions Clare failed to win a Championship match last season. They lost to Wexford, a Division 1B team, who were eventually hammered by Limerick.
This year they won one out of five League games and then lost a relegation play-off. Now they are out of the Munster Championship. Without Aaron Cunningham's outstanding performance off the bench on Sunday they would have been comprehensively beaten. Why on earth didn't he start?
So between last season and this, Clare have not won a Championship game, had players defect to football, had four players sent off in their last three Championship games, had players leave the panel, had stories of excessive punishments leaked to the media and, of course, were relegated.
Try putting a spin on all that, Davy.
