CYPRUS 2 IRELAND 3 (March 26, 1980)

THE John Giles era ended following Ireland's 3-2 victory in Nicosia which was the opening match of the World Cup qualifiers. Goals from Paul McGee and Mark Lawrenson brought a win which was not the walkover some had expected but in a group containing Holland, France and Belgium, it was the minimum required.

Ireland looked forward to those games in the autumn but two weeks after returning from Cyprus it was announced that Giles, who had done so much to change the outlook of Irish teams, had resigned, believing he had taken the team as far as he could.
