Congratulations Silgo? FAI admits engraving error on winners' medals

Shocking typo on the engraved FAI Cup medals

Sligo Rovers got more, or perhaps less, than they bargained for when they collected their medals after the FAI Cup Final yesterday.

And the Football Association of Ireland have said that "this was an error made by our supplier."

"The matter will be subject to a full review and the medals will be replaced,” according to an FAI spokesperson.

Drogheda United were apparently defeated by a team named “Silgo Rovers” at the Aviva Stadium , or at least according to the FAI, who managed to misspell the winning team on the engraved medals.

Sligo Rovers clawed back a victory from Drogheda United's early lead in dramatic fashion yesterday, securing their fifth title in the FAI cup.

But, having battled through a heart-stopping game, the champions were rewarded with a less than adequate keepsake to mark their victory.

“FAI Senior Challenge Cup Final. Drogheda United v Silgo Rovers. Winners 2013,” reads the metal memento.

Elsewhere, on Twitter, the substantial gaffe is mainly seen as a source of amusement rather than ire. Perhaps the Sligo Rovers fans are too busy celebrating their 3-2 win.

“Congratulations to Silgo rovers!!! Lolz,” tweets ‏@EL_Liamo while ‏@cahill_ashley posts: “I'd say there are a lot of Silgo Rovers fans with very sore heads today!!! ;)”

And ‏@markmccadden just appears to be happy with the win: “One game, one trophy... are SILGO Rovers the most successful club ever?”

Nonetheless, the medal will be quite a disappointment to the Sligo Rovers lads who fought hard to retain their title.

As ‏@paulgaillimh tweets: “Tippex won't solve this typo on FAI Cup medal. Or maybe there is a club called Silgo Rovers”
