Certerach facing Ballyroan battle

Trainer Mick Halford is under no illusions about the task facing Certerach in the Ballyroan Stakes at Leopardstown on Thursday.

A dual winner at the Dubai Carnival last year, the seven-year-old has subsequently found it tough competing in some of the top staying events.

He returned from a nine-month absence to finish a distant fourth in the Challenge Stakes at this track three weeks ago and with the winner of that event Fields Of Athenry reopposing, Halford does not expect his charge to land the Group Three prize.

Halford said: "He's in good form and it's a nice, small field, so we thought it was a good place to run him.

"He should have come on for his last run, but you wouldn't be expecting to turn form around with Fields of Athenry.

"We just hope he runs a nice race and then we can look towards the Irish St Leger trial and the Irish St Leger."

Certerach must concede weight to each of his four opponents, including the Aidan O'Brien-trained Fields Of Athenry.

Edelpour is on a hat-trick for Dermot Weld and Pat Smullen following wins at Gowran and Sligo, while Jim Bolger saddles runaway Curragh maiden scorer Morning Mix.

The Ger Lyons-trained Roheryn completes the line-up.
