Cavan made up for their defeat in the 2011 decider by striking late to edge Tipperary by 1-14 to 1-12 in the All-Ireland Ladies Football Intermediate final at Croke Park.

Bronagh Sheridan's successful penalty with six minutes remaining was enough for the Breffni women to edge this enthralling encounter.

The game was nip and tuck throughout with Tipp leading for long periods but it was Cavan who eventually won through to capture the Mary Quinn Memorial Cup.

Tipperary had a dream start with three unanswered points from Gillian O'Brien and a brace from Edel Hanley.

Once Cavan settled they quickly eroded Tipp's advantage with four points on the trot with Aisling Doonan(2), Grainne Smith and Blathnaid Sheridan.

The Munster side were back in front after 13 minutes after a fine solo goal from Mairead Morrissey.

Rosie Crowe responded for Cavan to make it a one-point game midway through the half.

Edel Hanley landed her third point of the game and Gillian O'Brien added her second as Tipp stretched their advantage to three points once more.

Aisling Doonan and Catriona Walsh exchanged points before Doonan slotted another with her trusty left foot to make it 1-6 to 0-7 after 23 minutes.

Mona Sheridan and Bronagh Sheridan raised white flags before Gillian O'Brien ensured Tipp led at the break by 1-7 to 0-9.

Edel Hanley and Claragh O'Reilly swapped points in the opening eight minutes of the second half before Grainne Smith restored parity with 19 minutes remaining.

Tipp edged back in front as Mairead Morrisey showed terrific vision to find Sheila Carew and she fired over with the goal at her mercy.

Another Edel Hanley point made it 1-10 to 0-11 after 14 first half minutes.

Frees from Bronagh Sheridan and Aisling Doonan levelled matters before Sheridan got her first from play to push Cavan ahead for only the second time.

Cavanhad all the momentum and were awarded a penalty with six minutes left when Tipp keeper Patricia Hickey was sinbinned for taking down Aisling Doonan as she beared down on goal.

Helen Kennedy came in but she couldn't stop Bronagh Sheridan's penalty which was expertly placed.

To Tipp's great credit they never gave up and late points from Mairead Morrisey and Sheila Carew made it a nervy finish for teh winners but they held on.
