Reading the CBAI website the other day, I was so chuffed to note that, over the past few years, 190 clubs around the country have contributed €550,000 to charitable appeals. That is a marvellous reflection on our bridge players.
It is extraordinary that 20 years ago there were six congresses in Dublin. Before Malahide announced a resumption next season we were down to just one.

That is the Dublin Summer Congress which is scheduled for St Michael's College, Ballsbridge, from this Friday.
The usual programme starts with mixed pairs on Friday, congress pairs on Saturday and teams on Sunday. For entries contact Rory Egan at 086 8192765.
What would you open not vul on the East hand? There is a common thought you shouldn't pre-empt a minor when you also hold a four-card major. Poppycock! Have a look at those two singletons. You better be active before they find a fit.
Next question: what do you bid as South when 3NT appears on your right.
Bidding ( S vul)
E S W N 3NT X P P 4C X P 4D P 5D P P P
With 7 cold, E was perfectly justified in making things as difficult as possible. You may also ask how NS got caught and whose fault was it.
That 3NT bid is very effective, but S has to shoulder some responsibility.
