ARSENAL

WOJCIECH SZCZESNY: Made a wonderful reflex save to deny Robin van Persie 10 minutes from time - 7/10.

BACARY SAGNA: Untroubled in defence. Played in a fine cross towards Olivier Giroud which his compatriot could not convert - 6.

PER MERTESACKER: Twice caught napping as Van Persie threatened and was relieved to see his former team-mate denied - 5.

LAURENT KOSCIELNY: Had a second-half header cleared off the line by Antonio Valencia and made a strong tackle on Wayne Rooney late on - 6.

KIERAN GIBBS: Had little opportunity to attack down the left flank despite facing little pressure in defence - 6.

TOMAS ROSICKY: Made some strong runs but was too hesitant around the United box to play a decisive ball - 5.

MIKEL ARTETA: Gave the ball away in second minute and was relieved to see Van Persie slip in the act of shooting - 5.

JACK WILSHERE: Tried and tried to find an opening only to be continually frustrated - 6.

MESUT OZIL: Showed glimpses of invention and created a late chance for Santi Cazorla - 6.

SANTI CAZORLA: Twice denied by Spain team-mate David de Gea towards the end of a quiet evening - 6.

OLIVIER GIROUD: Missed a glorious opportunity to head in the opening goal in the fourth minute - 5.

SUBSTITUTES:

ALEX OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN (for Rosicky, 75 minutes): Was unable to inject the required pace and invention to break the deadlock - 6.

MANCHESTER UNITED

DAVID DE GEA: Alert to twice save well from Cazorla late on after having few shots to deal with - 6.

RAFAEL: A heavy fall shortened his evening as he was replaced at half-time - 5.

PATRICE EVRA: Dealt well with Arsenal's floating attacking midfielders - 6.

CHRIS SMALLING: Switched to right-back for second half and slotted in seamlessly - 6.

NEMANJA VIDIC: Enjoyed parity in a muscular duel with Giroud as Arsenal failed to test his declining pace - 6.

MICHAEL CARRICK: United's key performer in defence and demonstrated his fine passing range - 7.

TOM CLEVERLEY: Broke up play in deep midfield role and frustrated Arsenal's attacking midfielders - 6.

ANTONIO VALENCIA: Headed Koscielny's second-half header off the line. Booked for foul on Wilshere - 5.

JUAN MATA: Scored on all four starts versus Arsenal while at Chelsea, but struggled to exert his influence - 5.

WAYNE ROONEY: Impact limited as United were unable to assert themselves. Almost saw his cross converted by Van Persie - 6.

ROBIN VAN PERSIE: Fluffed a second-minute chance and saw a header palmed on to the bar by Szczesny - 6.

SUBSTITUTES

RIO FERDINAND (for Rafael, HT): First Premier League appearance since November, but coped well - 6.

ADNAN JANUZAJ (for Mata, 75): Largely anonymous in attack as United had to defend in the final minutes - 5.

ASHLEY YOUNG (for Valencia, 82): Like Januzaj, had to put defensive duties first - 5.
