THE READY BUSINESS PODCAST: Keep the fire in your belly, it’s a tough, tough road - Johnny Walker’s vision for a consumer disruption in healthcare
It was an unlikely setting to start out from, but when Johnny Walker was doing ultrasound scans on pregnant women in the Australian outback using the power of a diesel generator off the back of a truck, he thought there must be a way to improve and provide a better level of care to these isolated people.
He was always a bit entrepreneurial, starting with selling skateboards as a kid and he enjoyed the creative side of solutions. Medicine was, and is, his first love, but he says, ‘if you can bring business skills to your domain in medicine there’s plenty of opportunities’.
His current digital health business, Jinga Life, is a digital health record database that has global ambitions for digitising how we can all access our health data.
“The current system is bent and buckled,” says Walker. “You don’t put new money into old ways. We have to embrace new technology for a consumer disruption in healthcare.”
Despite his business success, he is still very much a clinician at heart, working three days a week ‘in the trenches’.
“I need to be with the patients to hear their problems,” he explains.
But for anyone looking to succeed, he has the following tips:
- Keep the fire in your belly, it’s a tough, tough road.
- Ask yourself, is this a real business? Is it a tangible problem that you have a simple solution to fix and is it scalable and can it be monetised?
- Don’t go it alone. Buddy up early on as it’s more fun.
