When do we lose the right to choose?

Arguably the greatest stain on America's conscience, the death penalty is an obscenity that has no place in a civilised society. Apart from the obvious horror of executing an innocent person, the state-sanctioned murder of even a genuinely guilty individual reduces the people - in whose name the act is committed - to the same moral level as the criminal. In other words, it is a declaration that the state's moral bottom line is no better than a killer's.

'There are so many dull people on radio and TV...'

Derek Mooney and Blathnaid Ni Chofaigh are deep in discussion. "The last time I spoke to Mattress Mick was just before Gay Pride in Dublin," says Derek. "He said to me, 'I have been asked to put a float into the Gay Pride March. What do you think?' I said to him, 'Absolutely. But do your van up and on one side of it just have two bunk beds - with you laying on the top bunk saying: 'Mattress Mick always on top!'" the RTE broadcaster laughs.
