Soccer clubs have chance each month to win €1,500

Soccer clubs across Wicklow are hiding their light under a bushel and have been slow to put themselves forward for the Aviva Club of the Month Competition.

Although there have been two monthly winners from Wicklow in recent years, Blessington FC in November 2009 and Enniskerry FC in October 2011, organisers say submissions from Wicklow clubs are down in recent years despite the prize fund of €1,500.

The Aviva Club of the Year Awards has fast become the benchmark on how clubs are performing up and down the country. The prestigious awards are run from October through to May with a different club selected every month as the Aviva Club of the Month, receiving €1,500 to assist in their overall development. Clubs are eligible to re-enter the awards every month and winners from previous seasons are also eligible to submit applications.

The winners of each monthly award are visited by Sports Presenter Jacqui Hurley and the Aviva TV team who spend a day with the club filming the club and their members while also setting them challenges to help win their club more equipment and training gear for their club.

Each of the monthly winners then go forward as finalists to the Club of the Year which is chosen at the FAI Festival of Football and AGM. The clubs will then have a final opportunity to submit presentations about their clubs to the Judging Panel before the winner of the Club of the Year is announced and a cheque of €5,000 presented.
