Barndarrig have even more celebrating to do

BARNDARRIG'S FOOTBALLERS have picked up their second piece of silverware in as many weeks as they lifted the Division 4 league title on Saturday to add to the championship crown won earlier.

FL DIVISION 4 FINAL in Roundwood

And their run of success for 2012 may not be over yet as they line out in the Swan Cup decider against Rathnew on tomorrow night at Greystones.

Last Saturday's win was not quite as easy as the final scoreline might suggest with Baltinglass offering stout resistance, particularly in the opening half which resulted in the teams being deadlocked at 0-2 each at the break.

While not putting away the chances that came their way, Barndarrig also found that they just could not break down the Baltinglass defence in the opening half, and goalie Mark Moore brought off a number of splendid saves.

Not surprisingly, therefore, Moore was one of the stars for the Slaneysiders and he got good back-up from Conor Whelan, Derek Byrne, midfielder Mark Ashton and John Murphy.

Barndarrig got their game together in the second-half, began finding the target and goals by Stephen Collins, Gary Byrne and Mick Murphy killed off the Baltinglass challenge.

Kevin Dempsey played a captain's part at midfield for Barndarrig and there were also strong performances from full-back Keith Bradshaw, Michael Murphy, Stephen Collins and Bernard Quinn when he came on.

The backroom team also played their part in Barndarrig's success this year and they were Tommy Byrne, Jim Waldron, John Clarke and the late Eugene Sheelin, who died earlier in the year.

Scorers - Barndarrig: Stephen Collins (1-1), Gary Byrne (1-0), Eoin Brennan (0-2), Seán O'Brien (0-1), and Mick Murphy (1-2).
