Avonmore can't unlock the secret of the Saints

SAINTS FC B'S popularity in Division 3 hit dizzy new heights on Sunday evening as they held league leaders Avonmore FC B to a stalemate.

Table-toppers Avonmore FC would have been dreaming of a goal-fest when they welcomed the Wexford side to Rathdrum on Sunday but they were in for a shock as they visitors shut up shop and earned themselves a 0-0 draw; their first point of the season.

Shamrock Celtic, Fassaroe YC, Ballywaltrim, Arklow United, St. Fergal's and Fairwood Celtic would have all welcomed this news with open arms as it meant that they were able to make up some yards on the Rathdrum club. Shamrock Celtic certainly didn't disappoint as they stormed to a 5-0 win over Carnew Celtic in Celtic Park. Stephen McGuinness helped himself to a hat-trick, while Craig Doyle and Sean Knowd were the Arklow side's other marksmen against the Carnew outfit.

Fassaroe YC however suffered the same kind of infuriating weekend that Avonmore endured as they found themselves unable to see off Carnew United. A 2-2 draw was the best the Bray side could manage against a side who had yet to register a point going into the weekend's action. Goals from Jack Kearney and Conor Byrne earned United the point.

The four remaining members of the chasing pack had a slightly more difficult task as they were in competition against each other this weekend. Ballywaltrim and Arklow United clashed while St. Fergal's AFC and Fairwood Celtic locked horns; both matches took place at the Ballywaltrim Community Centre.

Home advantage helped Ballywaltrim to a 2-1 win over the Ferndale Park side. Ciaran Dunne and Tony Kiernan bagged the efforts for Tommy Murphy's side. Unfortunately for St. Fergal's, home advantage couldn't prevent them from kissing goodbye to their 100% record. They had won four from four prior to Sunday but Fairwood Celtic's 1-2 result has brought that to an end. PJ O'Keefe did the damage for Celtic as he struck both of their goals, while a Bobby Messitt spot kick accounts for the Saints'.
