Wicklow's Emma O'Brien produced a stunning run in the girls under-18/Junior 4,000m race during the Irish Life Health National Senior and Junior Cross Country Championships at the National Sports Campus in Abbottstown to secure her spot on the Irish under-20 team for the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in the Dutch city of Tilburg on December 9.

As well as securing her place on the national squad, the Inbhear Dee AC athlete bagged the silver medal from the race finishing second to the superb Sarah Healy from Blackrock who came with a late burst to claim victory in a very competitive outing.

'Emma ran very well,' said Bill Porter of Wicklow Athletics, 'she took it on from the word go but when it came to the closing stages Sarah (Healy) put the boot down to clinch the win. It's great for Emma to qualify for the Europeans. She had to finish in the top four,' he added.

Una Britton failed to secure her spot on the Senior Irish team when she came home in 20th position having needed a top-six finish to book her ticket
