LOCAL BOY, Lorcan Murphy has had a spectacular year in basketball this year. Last week Lorcan was announced as the Basketball Ireland Schoolboy Player of the year.

He was, at the time of the announcement, in Holland playing for Ireland Under16 Basketball Team.

Lorcan plays for Presentation College who were announced as the Boys School of the Year and their Coach Marie O'Toole was awarded Boys School Coach of the Year.

Lorcan attended the Emerging Talent Camp in July of last year and from that was selected for the Ireland U-16 Squad along with two of his school mates, David Makin and Andy Bartley, who have represented Ireland on the development squad playing in France and against Wales in Dublin.

The final team was chosen in April of this year and Lorcan was delighted to make the final 12 players to attend the European Championships in Tallinn, Estonia in August of this year.

In the meantime the Pres Bray team, with which Lorcan plays, won the National Cup and Lorcan was awarded Most Valuable Player. Lorcan plays club basketball with Dublin Raiders, based in Loughlinstown and the Raiders Under-16 team won the Dublin Mens Basketball Cup 2010.

Lorcan is also a member of Bray Runners Athletics Club and his chosen event is High Jump and in June of this year Lorcan won the Leinster High Jump Championship in his age group, jumping a height of 1.80m.

We would all like to wish Lorcan and the Irish team the very best of luck in Tallinn in August.
