Yachts compete in tough sailing race
Challenging conditions did not stop the inaugural SSE Renewables Windfarm Race which took place last Saturday. Ten yachts in two classes took part in the event organised by Arklow Sailing Club.
They raced from Arklow pier to the North Arklow buoy, down the Eastern side of Arklow bank to the South Arklow buoy and back again. The vessels sailed a course of 32 miles with winds reaching speeds of 34 knots at one stage over the six-hour duration. While the winds were challenging, the weather remained dry.
The overall winner of class one was the yacht Aquelina, owned by James Tyrell, in second was Humdinger and Supergroove came in third. In class two, the overall winner was Showtime, with Indigo in second and Molly in third.
There are hopes that the race can become an annual fixture on the Irish sailing calendar. Meanwhile, members of the Arklow Sailing Club will sail north this weekend to take part in the Greystones Regatta.
