Wicklow girls help launch Mini Rugby Nations Cup

Two Wicklow ladies were on hand to help Irish rugby international Conor Murray launch the new Mini Rugby Nations Cup in the Aviva Stadium last week.

Wicklow RFC under-12 players Eve White (11) and Caoimhe O'Reilly (11) joined the Irish scrum-half to launch the event, which will see 20 boys' under-ten and girls under-12 teams play a tournament at the Aviva on Sunday, September 22 - the same day as Ireland's opening clash against Scotland in the Rugby World Cup in Japan.

The event will spearhead Avivan's #SafeToDream campaign, which celebrates how kids' dreams are the same as their Ireland rugby counterparts

Aviva is now on the hunt for those 20 young teams to compete. Tapping into the excitement of the World Cup, as well as representing their club, each minis team will be twinned with a team competing in Japan.

Conor Murray said he was delighted to be linked with the campaign and what it will mean to those young players who will get to walk the hallowed turf of the Aviva Stadium.

'Looking back on my time playing with my local club, Garryowen, when I was younger, it would have been a dream to play in Aviva Stadium with my friends, particularly during such an exciting time for Irish Rugby,' he said. 'Every Irish rugby player once dreamed of playing in Aviva Stadium and it's great that Aviva is giving the opportunity to so many clubs to get involved. Running out of the tunnel is such a buzz on match day, and it will be incredibly exciting for kids to experience this at the Aviva Mini Rugby Nations Cup.'

The regional dates and locations for the 2019 Aviva Mini Rugby Provincial Festivals have also been announced. These will take place in October, running concurrently with events in Japan, and offer both girls' and boys' the opportunity to develop as players at grassroots level. The Leinster Provincial Festival will take place at DLS Palmerstown in Dublin on Sunday, October 13.
