Sweet success for Jim and Mary

Against stiff competition, Wicklow Fine Foods have just won the Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2006 for Co. Wicklow.

The Enterprise Awards are run by Wicklow County Enterprise Board and give recognition to the past performance and achievements, and the future development plans of small and medium enterprises in Wicklow. As winners of the Wicklow Enterprise Awards, the company will represent Wicklow in the National Enterprise Awards. If successful, they'll go on to represent Ireland in the worldwide Entrepreneurship Competition.

Owners, Jim and Mary Healy, had no prior experience in the food business before buying the waffle-making equipment that they started out with. They have since trained in the art in chocolate making, in business management, and have travelled to Holland to research recipes and learn how waffles are made.

'We work hard to produce excellent-tasting products which don't use artificial additives,' Jim told the Jotter. 'We are always trying to respond to new trends in the market and plan to launch three new chocolate pouring sauces later this year.'

The company has won a number of awards for its products over the past number of years, including two awards for Most Innovative Product and two Gold Medals in the internationally acclaimed Great Taste Awards (Cinnamon Stick biscuits, and The Chocolate Garden of Ireland handmade truffles). The company currently employs eight and is in the process of recruiting two more production staff and a Sales Executive.
