Staff at Halpin's Bridge Café in Wicklow town will sleep rough overnight this week in order to raise funds for homeless charity The Simon Community.

The big 'sleep out' takes place on Friday, November 22, as staff will sleep outside the Bank of Ireland branch from 8pm until 6am on the Sunday morning.

Donation buckets are located at different shopping outlets and taxi services throughout the town, including Halpin's Bridge Café.

Staff have set themselves a fundraising target of €1,000.

Jackie Browne said she and fellow staff members were moved to act after the image emerged of a young homeless boy eating dinner off a piece of cardboard on the side of a Dublin street.

'The picture of that little boy eating food off a piece of cardboard made us want to do something. We will be having a bucket collection on the night as well. If anyone would like to join us on the night for a chat or to make a donation please feel free to come down. It's a charity close to our hearts, especially with Christmas approaching. All donations we receive will also go directly to the Wicklow Branch of the Simon Community on Kilmantin Hill,' said Jackie.

Wicklow Print Solutions in Rathnew also kindly donated two banners advertising the sleep-out.
