New RNLI fundraising branch

The inauguration of a new RNLI fundraising branch for Wicklow Lifeboat Station took place recently. New structures within the RNLI has seen the demise of the ladies guild which has been in existence since 1968 with the formation of a fundraising branch which will be open to men and women.

A supporters' group was also formed on the night. It is open to people who do not want to be part of a committee but are willing to support the RNLI when needed. Anyone wishing to become part of the supporters' group may do so by sending their application to the chairman of any member of the branch.

The inaugural meeting was chaired by the national organiser of the RNLI, Mary Newman, assisted by Dermot Desmond, area representative.

The officers and committee of the fundraising branch were elected. The chairperson is Phyllis Whyte, treasurer Anna May Phillips, PRO Maria Dunne and Lifeboat sales rep is Ann Rountree.

The committee is made up of Rose Barlow, Henrietta Cleary, Philomena Curley, Dorcas Murphy, Frances O'Byrne, Helen Seales, Jimmy Balbontin, John Sinnott and Andrew O'Brien.

Breeda Shine was appointed honourary president in recognition of her valued service over many years. Andrew O'Brien was elected honourary secretary.

The first event organised by the new committee will be the annual ABC Sale which will take place in the Assembly Hall on Bachelor's Walk, Wicklow, on Sunday July 11 at 2.00 p.m.
