An old friend came to visit Arklow Lifeboat station at the weekend in the shape of the RNLB Michael O'Brien.

Named after Arklow's former Lifeboat Coxswain, the RNLI's newest boat was welcomed by family, friends and former colleagues of Michael's as it made a courtesty call to his home town.

The new Shannon Class Lifeboat was on delivery passage to Clogherhead where the boat will be stationed.

It was named after Michael following a bequest in the will of Gorey farmer and long-time friend of Michael and Arklow RNLI, Henry Tomkins.

Following the emotional visit, a proud Jimmy Tyrrell, former Arklow RNLI Life Boat Operations Manager ,said, 'I campaigned for years to have a Lifeboat Class named after an Irish River, to see one of this class named after a colleague and friend is truly a great honour and fills us all with great happiness and pride.

'All of us at Arklow RNLI wish our colleagues at Clogherhead every good wish for the future, we know Michael will look after them.'
