A new business will get off to a swimming start in the Glenview Hotel in mid-October.

Aquatic physiotherapy classes will start in the hotel next month, offering a range of services. Run by husband and wife team Audrey and Shane O'Brien Aquatic Physio specialises in aquatic physiotherapy trading as Aquatic Physio Ireland

Shane said the service is very unique.

'From what we can gather we will be offering the only Aquatic Physio service in Wicklow. It is quite unique in some ways and there are very few practices of this nature in Ireland.

'Aquatic physiotherapy, or hydrotherapy, is a specialised area of physiotherapy. It involves supervised exercise in a warm water pool under the tuition and guidance of a physiotherapist. It is a form of rehabilitation which works well as an adjunct to traditional physiotherapy intervention.

'It is particularly beneficial to those who may experience difficulty doing land-based exercise. The buoyancy of the water helps to support the body and this weight-relieving property results in one being able to exercise and move more freely, with less pain.'

Audrey graduated from Trinity College in 2000 and she has worked in the public sector ever since. She has expertise in orthopaedics, rheumatology, musculoskeletal, sports injuries, chronic pain and care of the older person.

Audrey's interest in aquatic physiotherapy started in 2002 and since then she has gained extensive experience working with adults, with acute and chronic conditions, in water. She completed a Masters by research in 2011 which in part, investigated the effects of water-based exercise in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis.

Each aquatic physiotherapy programme lasts five or ten weeks and consists of an hour long weekly exercise class. The pool is located in the Glenview hotel which is not only a stunning setting but an ideal warm water pool.

Class sizes are small to ensure individual attention and are suitable for swimmers and non-swimmers alike.
