THE proposed routes for the new section of the N11 between Ballynabarneyand Arklow may be selected before the end of the year, according to Wicklow'scounty engineer.
Michael Looby told last week's meeting of the county council that theyare appointing consultants for the route selection process.
Wicklow councillor, Liam Kavanagh, said that it was vital that a linewas determined at Barndarrig as the land has been sterilised in the area.
`We need to be able to build on that land so a line for the road mustbe decided on once and for all,' he said.
Councillor Nicky Kelly stated that there was a lot of apprehensionsurrounding the Ballynabarney route. He said that people were not beingconsulted but they were hearing that their houses are being demolishedor that they won't be allowed to extend their homes.
Mr Looby assured him that people will be consulted in time.
The road will be upgraded to dual carriageway status. It is envisagedthat it will run partly along the route of the old N11 and partly on anew route.
Work has started on the upgrading of the N11 between the Glen of theDowns and Kilmacanogue. The work will then proceed to the section betweenNewtownmountkennedy and Ballynabarney. The final section to be completedwill be from Ballynabarney to Arklow, the county engineer explained.
It is expected to be two years before construction can start on thefinal stretch of the road. The council hopes to start the Newtown to Ballynabarneysection early next year.
