Ireland's largest Aqua Park has officially opened for business in Rathdrum.

Part of Hidden Valley Holiday Park, the new water attraction 'Splash Valley' is situated on a manmade lake and features over 30 inflatable obstacles for visitors to conquer.

Made possible by funding from the LEADER programme, which provides small local enterprises with grant aid, the new park had what Activity Manager Aonghus O'Briain described as a 'soft opening' over the Bank Holiday weekend.

'The first weekend was great,' said Aonghus. 'The weather was a little colder than planned but there's nothing we could do about that. We wanted a soft opening but everything went as planned.'

Confirming that the park would be open on Saturdays throughout May, weekends in June, and daily in July, Aonghus said more than 200 people attended the first weekend over the course of two days.

'People enjoyed themselves, lots of them said they planned to come back which is a good sign,' Aonghus said.

And while the emphasis is on the enjoyment aspect of the park, Aonghus confirmed that those at the park take the safety of their visitors very seriously. 'Visitors get helmets and wetsuits, which are included in the price. And we have fully trained instructors and staff on site at all times.' he said.

Standard adult tickets begin at €20 but group and family bookings are accepted. In addition, the park welcomes school tours, scouts, youth groups, corporate outings and birthday parties. Private hire of the entire Aqua Park is available for all types of groups. Bookings can only be made online.
