Mary finishes her 40th Dublin City Marathon
An Arklow woman has received the Lord Mayor's medal for completing her 40th Dublin City Marathon.
Well-known runner Mary Hickey Nolan is the only woman to finished all 40 marathons. She was one of 13 people who were honoured before the event got underway on Sunday last as they have completed all 39 previous races.
Speaking to this paper before the race, Mary said she had been struggling following an injury.
However, speaking yesterday (Tuesday, October 29) she explained that the race had gone 'better than expected.'
'The race went well and much better than I expected. My strategy was to walk and jog, but, I did so very carefully. I finished in a time of 5 hours 20 minutes,' Mary said.
'It was very special to receive the Lord Mayor's medal. We also got to start before the elite runners which was a huge honour.'
Although well known in running circles, Mary made national headlines last year when she ran around Ireland to raise money for the RNLI.
'I received lots of messages of support from coastal communities. It was a great day,' Mary added.
