Man voluntarily leaves flat following stand-off

Gardai were involved in a tense stand-off for close to three hours after a man barricaded himself inside a flat in Ashford.

The drama unfolded on Thursday evening just after 5 p.m. with Wicklow Gardaí supported by the Public Order Unit and the Armed Support Unit. An ambulance was also on standby.

Gardaí were concerned for the well-being of the man who eventually engaged with trained Garda negotiators and responded to questions.

After close to three hours, the man exited the property and voluntarily got into an ambulance which brought him to hospital.

No one was injured or threatened during the incident and no property was damaged.

The operation was stood down at around 8 p.m. and a number of roads, which had been closed, re-opened.
