Man dies as car hits bridge and overturns

ONE MAN was killed while another is in a serious condition after a single car crash at Sean Kelly Bridge in Sally Gap on Sunday.

The victim has been named locally as Patrick 'Paddy' Connors, a native of London who had been living in Blanchardstown.

The accident occurred around 5.30pm when the car in which Mr. Connors was travelling hit the edge of the Sean Kelly Bridge causing it to overturn.

Before the car left the road it was spotted by a garda jeep which turned to pursue the vehicle.

However, by the time gardai managed to catch up with the vehicle further down the road, the car had already overturned.

As there was a garda car in the area at the time of the accident, the incident was automatically referred to the Ombudsman Commission. A passenger in the car who is believed to be a relative of Mr. Connors remains in a critical condition at Beaumont Hospital following a suspected bleed in the brain. A third man, who was also in the car and also thought to be a relative, is being treated for non-life threatening injuries at Tallaght Hospital. The commission is appealing for information at 1890 600 800.
