Members of the emergency services from throughout West Wicklow joined with the local Garda division in Baltinglass last weekend for a crime prevention awareness day.

Wicklow Civil Defence, Baltinglass Fire Service, An Garda Siochana and Glen of Imaal Mountain Rescue all showcased their work, providing an insight into the services they provide while also educating the public on issues such as vehicle and home safety.

Superintendent Martin Creighton organised the event and he said it had proved beneficial for all concerned. 'It was very well received, we handed out 500 flyers on crime prevention awareness to the public and tried to make people aware of their own role in crime prevention, particularly in relation to their property, their home and vehicles.'

The event also gave the guards an opportunity to acknowledge the work done by other services. 'We wanted to give some exposure and kudos to the people who back us up,' said Superintendent Creighton, who added that the relationship between the guards and the community was a strong one.
