A Wicklow group has become the first Irish band to perform at a prestigious international event in the United States.

Arklow's Inbhear Mór Performance Ensemble have recently returned from competing at the Drum Corps International competition as part of their 13-day tour of several American cities. Around 40 people including supporters and parents made the journey across the Atlantic for the group's historic trip.

The marching and performing arts group were the first Irish Drum Corps to take part in this Drum Corps International event. The ensemble spent four days in Indianapolis where they performed their 2019 production 'Rhapsody: A Bohemian Life' at the competition. They also performed two shows at the SoundSport International Music Festival which takes place alongside the Drum Corps International event.

The Arklow band competed alongside teams from the United States, Canada, Costa Rica and Columbia. The Inbhear Mór Performance Ensemble's show was very well-received and they placed seventh out of the 12 units in their class, scoring an impressive 84.00 which earned the group a silver rating.

The competition was considered to be a resounding success for the ensemble who earned a host of new fans across the pond. The Inbhear Mór Ensemble were also presented with a special recognition award from Drum Corp International for Outstanding Performance. This was to recognise the achievement of being the first Irish Drum Corps to perform at the event.

During the tour, the band performed two shows at the city of Marion at the Wildcat Stadium of Indiana's Wesleyan University.

At the end of the tour, the group had two free days to explore the city of Chicago before returning home.

Speaking to the Wicklow People, the ensemble's manager Oisin Molloy said, 'it was great. Once it was done, we wanted to do it again. The trip went really well. Our musicians learnt so much from the experience.'

The band played to audiences numbering in the thousands during their time in the United States. The Inbhear Mór Performance Ensemble expressed their sincere thanks to the local businesses and people of Arklow for their great support for this tour.

The competitive season is not over yet for the Arklow group. At the end of September, they will travel to the Netherlands for the European Championships.

The band will start classes for new members in October. Anyone interested in joining the ensemble can email inbhearmor@gmail.com for more information.
