German Ambassador to attend WW1 commemoration service

The Great War Commemoration at Woodenbridge will take place on Sunday, November 3 at 3 p.m.

The principal speaker will be the German Ambassador to Ireland Ms Deike Potzel. Frank Curran, Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council, will give the opening address followed by a wreath laying.

The memorial remembers the 2,015 men and nine women who died from direct action during the course of World War One. Their names are recorded on 15 Wicklow polished granite slabs and listed by town and village.

Woodenbridge was chosen as the location of the County Wicklow World War One memorial because of its association with John Redmond, MP and leader of the Irish Parlimentary Pary, who gave an iconic speech at Woodenbridge in September 1914.

All are welcome to attend the event. Refreshments will be served afterwards in Woodenbridge Hotel. There will also be a special lecture on the effect of the war on German nationals living in Ireland after the main ceremony.
