Gemma appointed principal of Educate Together in Newtownmountkennedy
Gemma Curry has been announced as the principal of the new Newtownmountkennedy Education Tolgether National School, which is due to open this August.
Education Together won the patronage process for the new eight-classroom primary school in February after running a succesful campaign.
Ms Curry holds a Masters Degree in Education and Leadership from UCD. She was a founding member of staff at Esker ETNS in Lucan, Co Dublin, in 2007 and, along with a small team, helped to build it into a thriving school community. She was appointed Assistant Principal in 2010 and Deputy Principal in 2017.
She has been an ethical advisor with Educate Together since 2014 and works to promote the Ethical Education curriculum through the Educate Together network.
'My belief that small changes can reap great rewards is one which I strive to instil in the children with whom I work. For me, Ethical Education is the foundation for empowering children to become informed, responsible, global citizens,' said Ms Curry.
During her time at Esker ETNS, Ms Curry worked as a mainstream teacher, Home School Community Liaison Officer and Special Educational Needs teacher. She also helped establish and lead the school's Student Council and the Green School Committee. The school is now working towards its fourth Green Flag.
Anne Gregory, Chair of the Newtownmountkennedy ETNS Start-up Group, was a leading figure in the campaign for patronage of the new school and she feels Ms Curry will be an excellent appointment.
She said: 'This is wonderful news for the town and community and we look forward to working with Gemma as this new school grows and flourishes, not only in the months but into the years ahead.'
Niall Wall, School Manager and Regional Development Officer for Educate Together said: 'This is a fabulous development for the school to have recruited such a high calibre principal and we look forward to Gemma commencing and engaging with families towards building a wonderful school community in Newtownmountkennedy ETNS.'
The new school will open to Junior Infants in August of this year.
