Gardai fighting a spike in drugs activity

Joint Policing Committee meeting

Deborah Coleman

Criminal drug activity across west Wicklow has been a priority for Gardaí this year, as it was revealed that an increase of 169 per cent was recorded in cases of the possession of drugs for personal use.

So far this year, gardaí have investigated 78 cases, an increase of 49 compared with 2017.

There was a 100 per cent increase in the level of possession of drugs for sale or supply with eight incidents recorded, compared with four last year.

Chief Superintendent John Paul Quirke told Wicklow's Joint Policing Committee this week that a new detective unit based in Blessington has been working hard in the area and getting positive results.

The committee was also informed that Donard Garda Station is to reopen in January following the completion of upgrade works.

However, despite a request made by Cllr Gerry O'Neill, Blessington Garda Station will not be receiving any refurbishment in the foreseeable future.
