There were dramatic scenes to behold in Wicklow in recent days as members of the Wicklow Garda Division Public Order unit engaged in extensive training.

Over 20 gardaí from across the Wicklow Division took part in a three-day training programme delivered by trained instructors.

The training is an annual event for the officers who are deployed to large public events such as concerts, demonstrations and protests.

They were kitted out in full flame resistant riot gear, including padding, helmets and shields, and were armed with batons and handcuffs.

Trainees had to cope with a number of scenarios including having fire balls thrown at them.

They also practiced a number of drills and were trained in the use of riot equipment.

A Garda spokesperson said that this unit will be deployed around the county during the coming months.

'They are often in attendance where big crowds are expected. They carry out risk assessment and are often deployed as a preventative measure. This unit will be present at a number of upcoming events in Co Wicklow, including the upcoming political event at Druid's Glen,' the spokesperson said.
