Dunlavin lady enjoys 100th birthday
A great night was held in the Keadeen Hotel, Newbridge, on Saturday, June 8, to celebrate Dunlavin lady Nan Ward's 100th birthday.
Nan Ward (nee Whelan) was born on June 9, 1919, in Calverstown, one of eight children. At the age of 15, she went to work in Freemans as a housekeeper. She worked there before moving to Byrnes' Hotel, Kilcullen.
She met Tom Ward when she was 23. The couple married shortly afterwards and moved to Usk, Dunlavin, where she worked in farming. They had five children, two boys and three girls: Mary, Elizabeth, Phil, Tom and Kevin, who sadly died when he was three months old. Nan's husband Tom passed away in 1980.
Nan has always enjoyed life to the full. Her sense of humour, wit and positivity makes her a great friend and neighbour who is well loved by all who know her. She has a great love of music and is never far from a good party. Nan remains very active. She looks forward to Thursdays when she attends the day care centre in Newbridge, prayer meetings and the annual Kilcullen Christmas party.
Nan would like to thank everyone for their well wishes, cards and gifts and she looks forward to many more birthdays to come.
