Coronavirus threat puts an end to all parades

St Patrick's day celebrations are cancelled

St Patrick's Day parades in Wicklow town, Rathdrum and Newtownmountkennedy have been cancelled due to fears over the spread of Covid-19.

In fact, all the parades in the county have now been called off due to the coronavirus, with other local events also affected.

Claire Gallagher, Chairperson of Wicklow town's St Patrick's Day committee, said the organisers were left with little choice but to cancel this year's proceedings.

'We decided to cancel the parade in the interest of public health and safety. It's with heavy hearts we came to the decision but we think it is the right choice.'

A world record bid for the most people dressed up as lions in the one location which was due to take place on St Patrick's Day in Wicklow town, has been postponed to a later date, while Wicklow Drama Group has also postponed its production of 'Cupid Worse Skirts' which was due to take place later this month.
