Ballywaltrim Post Office back open after five-month closure
Ballywaltrim post office opened for business again on Monday morning following a five-month closure.
Postmaster Amjad Malik re-opened the office at its former premises at News Stop on Kilbride Lane.
Cllr Joe Behan was there on Monday to cut the ribbon, as the facility is returned to the public.
'The news will be welcomed by thousands of local people who used their post office for many years until the sad and untimely death of the previous post master, Ann McCarty,' said Cllr Behan. 'I encourage everyone in the Ballywaltrim area to use their local post office and ensure that it will continue to be a strong local financial service in the heart of our community.'
Cllr Behan had arranged a petition locally, as the tendering process ran in to some difficulty and delayed the re-opening of the office.
Ms McCarthy had previously announced her retirement, but had agreed to remain on until new arrangements could be made, after plans to relocate the facility to a nearby site on Boghall Road fell through. Sadly, she passed away soon after.
The tender process for Centra on the Boghall Road had run in to difficulties, so the process had to begin again.
Ultimately, a new post master agreed to take over the existing premises and re-open at Kilbride Lane.
Mr Malik responded to An Post's request for someone prepared to operate the office.
