At last! Work to begin on hospice

Esther Hayden

The sod is finally being turned for the new Wicklow Hospice tomorrow (Thursday).

The sod turning at Magheramore marks the end of a nine-year battle to build a hospice in Wicklow.

The 15-bed hospice, which will be staffed by seven palliative care nurses, will be under the umbrella of Harold's Cross and the Blackrock Hospice.

A total €4 million has been raised by the public over the past nine years and the support of Minister Simon Harris, lead to a further €1.25 million from the HSE, bringing the funds to €5.25 million allowing the charity to secure a bank loan for the balance.
