Anger and disappointment as vandals wreck Christmas tree
The community of Baltinglass was dismayed to see that their beautiful town centre Christmas tree was targeted by vandals.
The incident happened on Saturday, December 22, just days after the successful tree-lighting ceremony took place in the market square.
'We don't know exactly what happened or why, but all the lights were pulled into a bunch and broken. The star was over to one side where it looked almost like somebody tried to climb it,' said committee member Tracy Barrett.
Ms Barrett said that the committee members were extremely disappointed to see such senseless vandalism take place following huge community effort to deck the town out for Christmas.
'So much work goes into this all year round. That tree is not donated. It cost about €400 and the committee fundraised to buy it. The lights were destroyed so some members and other volunteers had to come up on the Sunday before Christmas and try and make it look nice again. They had to use the town's Christmas lights to make it look decent as the tree lights were broken,' she said.
'Why anybody would do something so malicious we don't know,' Ms Barrett added.
The committee appealed to anyone with information to contact local gardaí.
