Stick the kettle on for cancer support
THE coffee pots are brewing up for the sixth annual East Coast FM Wicklow-wide coffee morning in aid of cancer support services all over the county as well as the Wicklow Hospice Foundation.
It will be on from 10 a.m. to 12 midday on Friday April 4 with 11 main venues taking part from Bray to Arklow.
Declan Meehan will link-up live on air to each venue a couple of times throughout the morning and interview some of the well-known people supporting the event including Paddy Casey, Mary Byrne and Mary Coughlan.
'Over the last five years, we've managed to raise over €157,000 in aid of the Cancer Support Centres in County Wicklow and the Wicklow Hospice Foundation,' said Claire Darmody who spearheads the initiative.
'Last year the station with the help of all our listeners raised over €45,000 during the two hours of the coffee mornings and with additional fundraisers.'
Every penny donated goes to the charities with all of the celebrity guests, sound equipment, refreshments, prizes, posters, transport, tea, coffee, raffle tickets, reporters and venues donated free of charge.
'To make this event a bigger success and to raise plenty more cash for the Wicklow cancer support services and the Wicklow Hospice Foundation we also need to get as many people as we can who can't make it to the venues, also raising money and taking part on the day,' said Claire. 'Listeners, local businesses and organisations have got in touch to run their own event, which is important to grow the event.'
Some businesses are donating a percentage of their profits or takings on the day. Some local resource centres, famers markets, private homes and coffee shops will hold mini coffee mornings with raffles and provide refreshments for small donations.
