Sonas joy at social housing awards
SONAS Housing Association and Wicklow County Council were among the winners at the Allianz Community Housing Awards held at the ICSH National Social Housing Conference in Wexford last week.
They were announced as category winners for their project in Wicklow town which won the collaboration initiatives section which illustrates collective benefits, achieving efficiencies and shared learning.
Sonas Housing Association provides a support service to women and children who are have experienced domestic violence.
The judging panel commended the project for 'its outstanding project team collaboration, commitment and determination and identified the project as exemplar for the regeneration of a derelict building with significant benefits for the local urban fabric and community'.
The judging panel also recognised the difficult history of the building Sonas is located in, commenting that the 'strength and commitment of this local collaboration was truly tested in the delivery of this project.'
The building was signed over to Sonas in 2011 and officially opened earlier this year.
The Community Housing Awards were established by the Irish Council for Social Housing (ICSH) in 2003 to recognise excellence in good design and housing management and strong links with the local community for local authorities, housing associations and co-operatives.
