One more great year for group
A large number attended the recent AGM of the Rathdrum Historical Society held in the annexe of the RDA Hall.
Chairperson Irene Parsons, in her opening address, paid tribute to the late Dominic Ryan, who had held the position of PRO of the historical society for many years and who passed away shortly after last year's AGM.
She described Dominic as a true gentleman and a great friend to all and expressed the sympathy of the society to his wife Joan and to John, Sinead and Susanna. Irene recounted the many events and talks organised by the Society during the past year and went on to outline some of the interesting lectures planned for the current season. Irene thanked her officers on the committee and especially Joan Kavanagh for helping to organise many speakers and lectures.
Irene is standing down as chairperson after twelve years of devoted service to the society, so many warm tributes were paid to her for her hard work and dedication through those years. She has organised several enjoyable outings and weekends away to places of historical interest in many parts of the country. Irene encouraged all local historical enterprises and was also particularly supportive to two members of the society who published books on topics of local history during her term of office. It is hoped that she will continue to be an active member of the society sharing her wealth of knowledge and experience with others.
At the AGM treasurer Ger O'Byrne also presented a detailed report of the finances of the Society.
Ger was also elected as the new Chairperson. The other officers elected for the coming year are Vice Chairperson, Martina Kelly; Secretary, Jill McCarty; Treasurer, Breda Sheehan: PRO: Carmel O'Toole.
