Gelletlie's jewellers celebrates 200 years
Marie Heaney was the guest of honour as TJ Gelletlie's in Wicklow town held a special celebration on Saturday to mark 200 years of trading.
The shop was established in 1818, specialising in jewellery sales and clock-making. Five generations of the Gelletlie family have managed the business since.
Current owner, goldsmith Joan Gelletlie, organised the celebration beside the Halpin Monument on Saturday, with Marie Heaney carrying out the honours. Marie and her late husband, the poet Seamus Heaney, were regular customers of the shop and from time to time, Seamus would ask Joan to design and make special pieces of jewellery to celebrate an occasion.
'So many people in the surrounding area have given our business great support over the years and indeed the centuries,' said Joan. 'This celebration is just a little way to say thanks to the people of Wicklow who have helped the shop survive so long and remain the successful business it is today'.
