Men, women and children crawled out of their beds in huge numbers to attend the second Darkness into Light 5k in Baltinglass.

With over 1,000 people taking to the streets for the inaugural event last year, organisers were happy to report that it seems a similar number left their comfy beds in the dead of night to begin this year's walk at 4.15 a.m. last Saturday morning.

Darren Maguire from First Team Fitness was on hand to warm up the crowd before the start, encouraging them to stretch as the wiped the sleep from their eyes.

A number of participants travelled home to west Wicklow from UK and other parts of Ireland in order to take part in Darkness into Light - a fact which made organisers very proud to hear.

The walkers and runners took off along a beautiful tealight-lined route and arrived back at the finish line as the sun began to rise.

The committee of Julie O'Loan, Lorraine Dowling, Shirley O'Neill, Gavin Faron, Colette Bollard and Jean Allen have sent a heartfelt 'thank you' to everyone to supported the event, from those who pulled on their walking shoes to take part to the volunteers who helped the event run without a hiccup and, of course, the many local businesses and groups who offered their support and helped the second Darkness into Light in Baltinglass be every bit as successful as the first.
