Community news: Blessington Bulletin

Family fun day: Blessington AFC is delighted to announce their upcoming Coimín Greenway 5k and Family Fun Day sponsored by Kennys SuperValu Blessington. This event is a real opportunity to showcase the natural beauty and highlight fantastic local amenities in the area.

The 5k race trail starts at the Avon Blessington and leads south along the shores of Blessington Lakes and through forest and natural woodland. Enjoy the stunning views from Irelands first official E-Greenway. With cash prizes the race is professionally chip timed and there are bespoke medals for all race participants. There is also free kids races with all 5k entries and refreshments available afterwards.

The annual Blessington Pilgrimage to Knock Shrine in Co. Mayo will take place on Sunday, May 29. A bus will leave at 8 a.m. from outside the old Downshire House Hotel. For further details and bookings you can contact Mary telephone 087 6081729.

Darkness Into Light walk

Blessington' very first ever Darkness into Light is coming your way on Saturday, May 11. All fundraised will go to Pieta House in Dublin. To register for the walk go to or you can contact Greg blessington All support will be much appreciated f.

Car boot sale and market

The very popular car boot sale which takes place at St Kevin's Community Centre Blessington is coming your way on Sunday, May 12. For sellers the gates will be open from 7 a.m. and the sale for buyers will run from 9 a.m. till 3 p.m. There will be a limited number of indoor tables available and they will be distributed on a first come basis. If you would like to book one of these tables please contact Pat Conlon telephone 086 0752072.

There will be lots of bargains in Household and workshop goods, cakes, jams, books, CDs, clothing for all the family and lots more bargains. But make sure to haggle. Buyers please note that free car parking will be available in the grounds of St Kevin's Community Centre and the organisers encourage you to use this facility. Every month a local charity gets a most welcome donation from this event.

Hollywood Walking and Trails Club

The Hollywood Walking and Trails Club held their first meeting last week in Tutty's Pub Hollywood. This meeting was very well attended by enthusiastic walkers from Hollywood, Blessington and Dunlavin areas all with various walking experience from beginners to proficient in hill walking.

Guest speakers John O'Reilly from the Immal Walking Club and Helen Lawless Hill Walking Ireland discussed the process of setting up the walking club paying particular attention to legal structures, insurance and the responsibility of the recreational user for their own safety and that of others. Helen Lawless spoke about the health benefits of walking, the preservation of the natural environmental along with the importance of encouraging families and young people to actively participate in hill walking.

Citing contact with nature can rebalance ones equilibrium in this busy world.

The newly formed Hollywood Walking and Trails Club will be hosting fortnightly walks over the summer. Information on the upcoming walks will be posted in the Wicklow People Community Notes.

Meet the candidates

Blessington and District Forum is hosting a Meet the Candidates evening for the forthcoming County Council Elections in Tramway Theatre Blessington on Monday, May 13, at 8 p.m.

First Holy Communion

Congratulations to the boys and girls, who will receive their First Holy Communion this weekend May 11 and 12. Lacken Church at 11 a.m. will be the venue on Saturday while Valleymount Church will be the venue at 11.15 a.m. on Sunday.

Youth Theatre

A number of Blessington Youth Theatre Leaders are retiring this year after 11 years with the group.

It is now time for parents, past members and all those who may be interested within the community of Blessington and District to volunteer and ensure the continuation of this vibrant, wonderful Community Youth Group.

In this regard they invite those interested in continuing BYT to please attend an important meeting to discuss the future of Blessington Youth Theatre at the Tramway Theatre Blessington on Thursday, May 16, at 8 p.m. They look forward to seeing you there.

Cemetery Sunday

The annual Cemetery Sunday Ceremonies will take place on Sunday, May 19, at 3 p.m. The Ceremonies will begin with Mass and this will be followed by the blessing of all the graves in the cemetery. Parishioners are asked to contact relatives and friends living outside the area in case they may wish to come along on the day.

Parish book club meeting

The Parish Book Club will meet at 10 a.m. in the Crying Room, church of Our Lady this Thursday, May 9.The book for discussion is 'An Astonishing Secret' by Daniel O'Leary. It was published in 2017 by Columba Press. New Members are always welcome.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi classes (in aid of the Coimin Centre) take place every Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in HD Fitness (under the Lemon Tree). Suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. This is a gentle form of exercise which improves coordination, balance, joint mobility and core strength. Participants are asked to make a €3 contribution for the centre.


Blessington 'Tots' mini-rugby for boys and girls takes place every Saturday at St Kevin's Community Centre at 11 a.m. outdoors. Blessington Mini-Rugby for under-six, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11's boys and girls rugby practice resumes at Russborough House at 10 a.m. every Saturday and at Blessington GAA Astro every Tuesday at 7 p.m. Further details can be obtained at and Facebook.

West Wicklow Music Festival

Tickets are now on sale for the third edition of the West Wicklow Festival which takes place from May 15 to May 19. Building on the success of previous festivals the 2019 West Wicklow Festival boasts an incredible line-up of musicians and artists from all over the world with concerts being held at Russborough House and St Mary's Church Blessington.
