Community news: Blessington Bulletin

Oskars: Hopefully by now you have all heard some talk of the Blessington Oskars. We are in full swing and over the next couple of weekends our actors will be at the film locations filming.

Tickets for the event and the bus are now available from all our actors and committee members and also the Community College, McGreals (the event's main sponsor), Murphy's, West Wicklow House and the Office Shop. See everyone in City West Hotel Saggart on Saturday, February 23, for what promises to be a night not to be missed. Make sure to get your ticket in plenty of time and not be disappointed.

GAA club news

The club awards night was held in Avon Rí on Friday night, January 25. The winners were

Mick Murray the new Senior Manager was introduced to the crowd in attendance and he had a few words to say about the year ahead. Thanks to the Avon Ri for hosting the event.

Congratulations to our LGFA Coach of the Year Jess Brennan. Jess will receiver her award in Croke Park on February 22. What a super achievement that has been a long time coming. Jess gives up so much time to the club and it is nothing more than you deserve. Blessington GAA and Wicklow GAA are very proud of you and your achievement at national level.

Kim Connors received her well-deserved award for Senior Ladies' Footballer of the year 2018 at the Garden County Awards ceremony on Saturday, January 19, in the Arklow Bay Hotel. Well-deserved and congratulations from everyone in the club. It was a great weekend for Kim as she received a scholarship sponsored by Leinster LGFA from Leinster LGFA Council president Dominic Leech at the Leinster LGFA annual Convention.

Seniors - The lads are back training hard and looking forward to their season under the new management of Mick Murray along with Gavin Wynn, Dessie Nolan and admin Annmarie Nolan. Juniors - Training commenced on Saturday, January 26. Management of Steven Doyle, Peter Behan, John Walsh, Geoff Elliot and admin Michael Sargent.

Car boot sale and market

The very popular car boot sale which takes place at St Kevin's Community Centre Blessington is coming your way on Sunday February10. For sellers the gates will be open from 7 a.m. and the sale for buyers will run from 9 a.m. till 3 p.m. There will be a limited number of indoor tables available and they will be distributed on a first come basis. If you would like to book one of these tables please contact Pat Conlon telephone 086 0752072.

Buyers will be delighted to see the car boot sale back again with lots of bargains in Household and Workshop Goods, cakes, Jams, Books, CDs, Clothing for all the family and lots more bargains. But make sure to haggle. Buyers please note that free car parking will be available in the grounds of St Kevin's Community Centre and the organisers encourage you to use this facility. Every month a local charity gets a most welcome donation from this event.

GAA lotto

Blessington GAA Club held their very latest lotto draw on Tuesday, January 29, with another brand new jackpot which was standing at €2 400. Once again the top prize was not won and only one lucky punter managed to match even three numbers. She received €300. The winning numbers drawn on the night were 3, 4, 23 and 24 Tickets priced at only €2 are already on sale at the usual local outlets or from a committee member for the club's next lotto draw which will have another new jackpot which will be standing at €2,600. The draw will take place on Tuesday, February 12.

The club urge members and supporters to purchase tickets and also ask them to encourage friends and relatives to do the same. The recent sales have been excellent and the club really appreciate it. This is the club's main fundraiser during the year and a lot of time and effort is put into making it a success. Remember if you get the numbers right on the night you will be winning the jackpot which no doubt would come in very handy at this time of the year.

Book club

The Parish Book Club will meet at 10 a.m. in the Coimín Centre on Thursday, February 7. The book chosen is 'A Cry is Heard' by Jean Vanier. The book is available in paperback. New members are always very welcome. More details will be announced closer to the event.

St Brigid's NS

St Brigid's NS Manor Kilbride is now accepting enrolments for all pupils wishing to start in September. Please contact the school office at 01 458 2550 for an enrolment form. St Brigid's will also be having an open evening for all prospective students and their families on Tuesday, February 19. The school will be open from 7 p.m. till 8 p.m. All the staff in the school looks forward to seeing you there.


Donard Ceoltas Ceoltoiri Eireann will stage their annual ceili in Donard Hall on Friday, February 8, at 9 p.m. Music will be provided by Phil and Liz. All funds raised will go to patient comfort Baltinglass Hospital. All are most welcome. Gifts for the raffle will be much appreciated.

First Responders

Blessington Community First Responder Unit will be holding a bag pack in Dunnes Stores in Blessington on Thursday, February 14, raising funds for the Irish Heart Foundation. All donations will be greatly appreciated. If you have an hour to help out contact Simon at 087 2785924.

Soccer club seek players

Blessington FC under-13 team is looking for players for the upcoming season Goalkeepers and Outfield Players. You must be born in 2006. Season starts in February. For more information call Kenny at 086 2292303 or Tony 087 6106096.

Kilbride Book

The Kilbride Book is now available from Craul's Shop Manor Kilbride. There are lots of lovely photos. It would make an ideal present particularly for someone who used to live in the Manor Kilbride area.

Library news

Blessington Library is hosting a workshop this Saturday, February 9, from 1.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. facilitated by Carmel Larkin. This workshop will focus on the benefits that keeping a daily journal can bring to your personal well-being. Walking group

Blessington Community Walking Group meets every Monday and Thursday in the Coimin Centre at 7 p.m. (€2 for tea or coffee on Mondays). All ages and fitness are welcome. Walks take place on Saturdays from Primary Care Centre at 10 a.m.

Comhaltas classes

Blessington Comhaltas hold classes in Bodhran, Concertina, Whistle, Flute, Beginner Fiddle, Intermediate Fiddle, Tunes Class, Singing Class with Phil Callery of the Voice Squad for all ages, Guitar Lessons, Ceili Band, Ballads with Bat Kinane (Songwriter). They have two Harps to loan plus lessons through Wicklow Music Generation/Blessington Comhaltas. Classes take place every Sunday on at 5 p.m. in Tramway Theatre. Samaritans recruiting new volunteers

Newbridge and Kildare Samaritans is recruiting new volunteers. If you live in County Kildare or surrounding counties and are interested in volunteering with the Samaritans please come along to one of the upcoming information nights for prospective volunteers.
