NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

All of our teams were in action last weekend and though they all may not have won, their performances which are the most important thing were in the main not bad.

Our under-eights made the short trip to Kilcoole to take on St Anthony's and after a very good series of games the home side just edged out our team. On the day best for Newtown were Cian Foley and Tommie Ryan.

Our under-nines travelled to Avoca to take on St Patrick's and they played very well to edge out the home side. On the day Nathan Donohoe, Elliott Garrett,

The under-10s lost narrowly in a high scoring game away to Arklow Town White. Leon O'Connor scored a fine hat trick and Lucas Dowdall added the other. On the day our guys played their part in a very good game.

Our under-11s made the long trek to Ballard Park to take on Shillelagh Navy and despite a much improved display they went down on a 3-1 scoreline. Mikey Synnott scored the Newtown goal while on the day William Valentine, Daniel Eager, Pat Carey and Sebastian Anton were among the star players. Mikey went on to captain the WDSL Academy team in a football blitz in Drogheda on Sunday where they reached the final but unfortunately they finished runners-up to Wexford. Well done, Mikey.

Our under-12s played well but suffered a 3-1 defeat in the league away to Avonmore. On the day the team played reasonably well and Cathal O'Toole scored the Newtown goal. Our 13's exited the cup after a second leg defeat away to Carnew. They started brightly and took the lead through Max Synnott but a couple of quick goals from the home side seemed to knock the wind from the sails of our team and Carnew ran out winners. Good luck to Carnew in the rest of the competition. On a negative the official referee failed to show up to do the game and after an agreement from both sides a Carnew official did the necessary. This is the third time this has happened this season and it's just not good enough.

Just a little note to all parents of kids in the club. We have always took players of all ability levels and among the few things we ask of everybody is that once you sign for a team, please turn up for your training and matches. Though we could do with a couple of extra players at the older age groups, we are well stocked with players at all the younger age groups. When you sign your child to play on any team you must (1) practise and (2) turn up for your team's matches and not just home games. It is not on to go AWOL for weeks and then turn up at a game and have a moan when your child doesn't start the game. For example, if you join a swimming club and don't turn up to practise you would not be entered to take part in competitive competition. At a couple of age groups we are not far off having to enter another team as the numbers are there to enter a second team but come match day those numbers don't materialise. Happy to say this practise is in the minority and most of the players on all teams are regulars at training and matches and the odd time they are missing they do let our coaches know in plenty of time.

The following are the fixtures for the weekend Sat/Sunday, September 7/8. under-eights home to Avonmore ko Saturday at 11 a.m.; under-nines home to Avonmore Black ko Saturday at 10 a.m.; under-10s home to Roundwood ko Sunday at 11 a.m.; under-11s at home to Greystones Green ko Saturday at 12.15 p.m.; under-12s away to Avonmore FC ko (Midweek) to be confirmed; under-12s away to Wicklow Rovers B ko Sunday at 10 a.m.; under-13s home to Arklow United A ko Saturday at 10.30 a.m. (Fixtures and KO Times are subject to change)

Our ever popular fundraiser 'Last Man Standing' will get its first outing this season. The start date is the weekend of Saturday the 28th-Monday, September 30. The cost is €10 per head and all money raised go towards the youth of the area. If interested in participating please let any of our coaches and committee members know and they will put you in.
