It's a new Community Games Year and we would like to start by thanking you the parents and guardians and local schools for your continued support. Without this ongoing help and the support of the Principals and teachers, organising these events would not be possible.
The following are some of the events that will be run over the next few weeks in the schools. Art Competition from under-eight to under-16, Handwriting under-10 and under-12, table quiz under-14, Talent Competition which includes Solo Music, dance, singing and Recitation, Group Music, dance and singing - under-12 to under-16.
As you can see from the above list the Community Games is not all about sport and it's not all about winning either. There are in fact over 40 different events in the Community Games for under-16s to participate in and if you need any other information you can check out the website communitygames.ie.
Additional events such as Athletics, Field events, Long Puck, Swimming are run through the local clubs. Please note that the local area athletics competition will take place on April 27 in Aughrim Community field. We hope to have tag rugby and Soccer as an event too.
The County Blitz team event takes place on Sunday, March 1, in Dunlavin community school. This will host badminton chess, basketball indoor soccer and draughts. Debating and any other team events that are competing. please let us know your interest ASAP County Athletics Finals in Shillelagh on June 13.
County Cross Country in Avondale on March 29. The under-14 County Quiz is held in Aughrim NS on March 28 the County Art. Handwriting and model making is in Dunlavin on Saturday, April 18. The Talent county event is held in Glenealy on April 19 the Gymnastics County event is held in Arklow and the coordinator is Michael Kenny of Arklow Gymnastics Club. For anyone who wants to take part we can forward you his details. Date to be confirmed. The swimming county event takes place in Arklow on the afternoon of March 28 in Coral Leisure Centre. Please let me know interest by March 1.
Of course there are rules and regulations for all these events and they are available on the Community Games website, from the schools or Fiona Shannon at 087 3812537. Ais is excited to be offering a half price taster workshop on Thursday morning, February 27, at 10 a.m. This workshop will be a combination of pound and stretching.
Class will begin with a 30 minute Pound Rockout drumming inspired Workout. This is a full body workout that combines cardio, conditioning, and strength training with yoga and pilates movements, while using lightly weighted drumsticks. One of the best things about POUND is that it can be modified to work for a wide range of ages and abilities. You can adapt the movements and intensity to suit you.
We will end the class with a slow gentle 15 minute stretch. This will give you the opportunity to nourish your body and mind.
Cost: €4. All you need to bring along is yoga mat/towel. This class will continue if there is enough interested, which will then be a four-week block period payment of €30 per block. Feel free to contact Ais with any questions you may have at 086 0692799.
Yoga class for children
Due to expression of interest a proposed children's yoga class may commence Thursday, March 5, with Aoife from Enlighten Yoga in Annacurra Community hall. We are offering two times you can choose from as need numbers to proceed. Times 2.45 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. and 4.15 p.m. to 5 p.m. Age group: five to 11. Cost: €24 per four-week block
Introducing yoga to your children helps establish healthy habits at an early age. Yoga can enhance your child's strength, coordination and flexibility, while encouraging body awareness and self-esteem. It can reduce your child's anxiety and stress and promote a sense of calmness.

Tae Kwon Do class for children
Doreen Kenny, recently made history, by becoming the first woman in Europe to achieve the rank of Tae Kwan Do master. Doreen continues her classes in Annacurra Community hall on Wednesdays from 4.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. Cost: €25 per month (monthly fees only) Age group: five to 12. Taekwon Do is renowned for developing focus, co-ordination, physical strength, self confidence, agility, balance, discipline and respect. Barnardos used stamps appeal

45 Card Drive
45 card drive will be on Friday, February 7, in the saltee starting at 9 p.m.
There will be a whist drive in Annacurra Community Hall next Saturday night, February 8, starting at 9 p.m.

Bingo is played every Wednesday night in Avoca Community Hall at 8.30 p.m. Jackpots were not won on Wednesday, January 29. Next Bingo will be on Wednesday, February 5. Avoca Community Hall
Avoca Community Hall staff, users and managing committee are delighted to welcome five new directors to the Avoca Community Hall's Limited Company. They were elected on Thursday, January 16, at an EGM called by the outgoing directors, all of whom have retired.
The managing committee and the local community look forward to working with our new directors to ensure the hall continues to provide Avoca with this much valued community facility.

Indoor hurling continues in the hall on Monday nights. Sessions are broken down as follows: Junior and senior infants 6.30 p.m. to 7.10 p.m., First second and third classes 7.10 p.m. to 8 p.m. Fourth fifth and sixth classes 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. All boys and girls interested are welcome come along and join in the fun. No doubt they will be our future hurling and camogie stars.
Due to a poor turnout at recent AGM an EGM has been called for Thursday, February 6, at 8 p.m. in Knockananna Hall. As this is an EGM if there is no committee elected on the night, Knockananna Youth Pojects committee will have to be dissolved. This will be a sad day for the community and for the youth of our village.
This committee has been successful in getting funding for our play ground an astroturf and have plans for further development, however these plans will not go ahead if people do not come on board and get involved. We are especially appealing to parents of young children and teenagers of the area to be at the meeting.
Tinahely Walking Club

Ann O'Neill will host her annual coffee morning on Friday, February 14, in the Courthouse Arts Centre 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All proceeds from this fundraiser will help support the great work of Sr. Ursula and the Missionary Sisters of the Assumption in Port Alfred, South Africa.
All this work is done within the spirit and framework of the local society of St Vincent de Paul Conference, St James, Port Alfred. Besides assisting individual families in need and who fall upon hard times, the programme provides regular relief for many in the community.
Your generous donations will enable them to continue with a number of their activities, including the distribution of food parcels, the provision of school uniforms, daily meals for the children and assistance to families.
Thanks to the generosity of supporters, winter blankets are distributed during winter - yes, it gets very cold during their relatively short winter. With the support and encouragement of their partners, overseas benefactors and friends from near and far, the charity is looking forward to being able to continue with these programmes during 2020.
